Young Irish Film Makers (YIFM), is a digital film training and production centre where young people aged 13 to 20 years are empowered, through a rigorous practical training programme, to work at broadcast standards with professional digital equipment to make films, particularly feature length films.

The organisation was founded twenty years ago (1991) in Kilkenny City as an innovative youth film training and production centre. The aim is to create within the Irish film industry something that has never been attempted before – full length motion pictures made entirely by young people. It is a unique creative vision that places young people at the very centre of the Irish and international film production process. It is the only organisation of its kind in Ireland or, indeed, Europe.

Youth film making programme is a creative and powerful tool. In addition to film making and digital technology skills, our programmes encourages creative expression, teaches young people to set achievable goals, develops leadership skills, creates a collaborative work environment, encourages young people to solve problems, and builds self-esteem — and it’s great fun.

Young Irish Film Makes goals for our 20th year are:

  • To make a feature film every year.
  • To create a slate of ongoing features.
  • To raise our training and production skills to professional standards.
  • To improve our presentation standards across all media disciplines
  • To increase our funding and revenue streams through marketing and branding our products and talent across all media forms.
  • To maintain and develop our Internet presence though our website and youth film platform.
