Young Irish Film Makers are in the process of starting a CoderDojo (computer programming classes for kids) in Kilkenny!

CoderDojo is a movement orientated around running free not-for-profit coding clubs and regular sessions for young people. At a CoderDojo, young people learn how to code, develop websites, apps, programs, games and more. Dojos are set up, run by and taught at by volunteers. Dojos organise tours of technology companies, bring in guest speakers to talk about their career and what they do, and organise events. In addition to learning to code, members meet like minded people, show off what they’ve been working on and so on. CoderDojo makes development and learning to code a fun, sociable, kick ass experience. CoderDojo also puts a strong emphasis on open source and free software, and has a strong network of members and volunteers globally.

We are currently seeking mentors for the classes. If you are qualified for such a task and would be interested in helping out then please get in contact!! The classes will be held in YIFM headquarters in Kilkenny.

The young film makers were demonstrating their talents to the public and interviewed some well known local people including Thom Moore of Cartoon Saloon. The kids also filmed the acts that were playing live on stage including The Miami Showband and The Swinging Blue Cats. Young Irish Film Makers this year are celebrating a whopping 20 years so the set up was bigger and better than ever to celebrate this wonderful milestone.

All the fun and frolics of the St Patricks Day Parade were in full swing they were filmed by the young crew and were screened for the public on a large scale TV rig. Also shown were some films made by the young film makers this year as well as an exclusive open air premiere of their latest film ‘First Confession’ by Frank O’Connor, starring Pauline McLynn, Karl Spain and Brid Ni Neachtain which went down a treat.

There was also a competition running on the day to win a place at a YIFM summer camp. The lucky winner was Kate Mason and she will get to spend a week at YIFM headquarters in Kilkenny this summer making a movie while also having lots of fun. If you would like to know more about our summer camps or anything else about YIFM please head to www.yifm.com or call 056-6674677.

RTE paid a visit to Young Irish Film Makers over the week-end when they shot a sequence for their popular programme Winning Streak. Young Irish Film Makers is supported by the National Lottery through grant aid from The Arts Council. All our our technical members were fully involved setting up shooting opportunities from RTE crew.

We were really pleased that our friend, Tomm Moore from Cartoon Saloon, agreed to be interviewed on the programme, together with Hal Warner Clayton, winner of Junior Film Maker of the Year at the Fresh Film Festival. Parents and Junior members turned up to become audience members when it was time to Spin the Wheel for €25,000!

It was a really fun and interesting morning. Many thanks to our organiser, Garry McHugh and our technical co-ordinator, Darragh Kelly, as well as all our staff, parents, members and friends who worked so hard to make it all happen on the day.

You can view Ross Costigan’s great photographs here on our website.
