As part of the St Patricks Day parade celebrations Young Irish Film Makers will be setting up their very own studio on the streets of Kilkenny.

The young film makers will be demonstrating their talents to the public and will be interviewing some very well known local people. Young Irish Film Makers this year are celebrating a whopping 20 years so the set up is planned to be bigger and better than ever to celebrate this wonderful milestone.

All the fun and frolics of the St Patricks Day Parade will be filmed by the young crew and it will be screened for the public on a large scale TV rig. Also being shown will be some of the films made by the young film makers this year.

If your kids are interested in joining YIFM or would maybe like to attend one of this years summer camps the this would be the perfect opportunity to come on down and see what YIFM is all about. There will be demonstrations by the young crew on the art of film making so kids will get to see what exactly it means to be a Young Irish Film Maker.

“If you are a Young irish Film Maker and you want to get involved and be part of the crew on the day then just get in contact with Claire or Gary and let us know! We are looking for camera operators, sound, floor managers and more….”

If you wish to get in contact you can contact claire@yifm.com or call 056-6674677. Move over RTE, Young Irish Film Makers are here!

On Halloween night Young Irish Film Makers will hold the premiere of their summer production “First Confession”.

Starring in the film is the renowned Irish actress Pauline McLynn and funny man Karl Spain who will be walking the red carpet on the night. The films younger stars include newcomer Ferdia Roche as Jackie, a young boy, who is due to make his first confession before receiving his first Holy Communion. Jackie fears confessing his terrible sins because they include trying to kill his spiteful sister with a bread knife. The film follows poor Jackie as he struggles to keep from murdering his enemies, avoid the fires of Hell and cope with the mysteries of a dark confession box!

The film is based on the famous short story by Frank O’Connor and was adapted into a screenplay by Mike Kelly. All the lead child actors were chosen from the Young Irish Film Makers acting programme. The film is set in the 1950′s Ireland and was shot in and around Kilkenny City. Darragh Kelly, one of the producers explained a bit about the production “The cast and crew had a great time on the shoot which took two weeks of hard work and real focus from all involved. We are very proud of what we have achieved and of everyone who was a part of process.”

‘The process of getting young people to come up with an idea and follow the film making practice and see an end result. This works particular well for young people who need to see out come.’

‘It was very good process for the young people to learn, good for self esteem and positive for mixing peers and genders. Building their ability to stay focused on a goal.’

‘Great for self-confidence and the young people really got a sense of achievement – when watching the film.’ “Staff at Extern Limerick”

The impact of the film project that we undertook under your guidance is unfolding day by day in positive stories and experiences by all the young people involved. It has given them a sense of achievement, improved self esteem and confidence and some of the group were even encouraged enough by the process to return to school with a few to studying film and media in third level.“Kelly O’Keefe – Youth Justice Worker Limerick”

As part of our programme of 2010/2011, we fortunately secured the services of the Young Irish Film Makers. From the outset this organisation was excellent to deal with. They were open, friendly, accommodating, flexible, but most importantly understanding of our client base and the issues that pertain to them. “Aisling Mulhall – Southside Community Leadership, Limerick”

The YIFM is a valued contributer to Fresh Film Festival and has consistantly high production standards in their films. The office and outreach staff are attentive, reliable and interested in promoting and developing the work of young people. “Ciarda Tobin – Fresh Film Festival”
